The story of Hong Kong goes far deeper than its urban history.
Long before the modern city emerged, Hong Kong underwent millions of years of geological transformation, giving rise to its distinctive mountains, coastlines and natural landscapes. Over countless millennia, ancient organisms and plants thrived across this land, leaving behind precious imprints in the form of fossils that preserve the vital chapters of Hong Kong's prehistoric natural history.
As environments shifted, forests gradually took root, allowing native tree species to flourish. In time, through urban development and landscaping, plants from around the world were introduced, collectively shaping the rich and diverse ecological tapestry of modern Hong Kong. From ancient fossils to contemporary forests, Hong Kong's natural history has always been intertwined with the evolution of the city itself.
In support of the Muse Fest HK 2026 and its theme "Hong Kong Story," Nina Park presents "Stories of Hong Kong: A Natural Journey through Time." This special programme invites the public to explore Hong Kong's geological and fossil heritage, and discover how trees have helped shape both our urban and natural landscapes. From fossils embedded in rock strata to the green canopy spanning the city, every piece of natural heritage tells a story that belongs to Hong Kong.
