Exploring Earth Sciences | Hong Kong Geology & Fossil Discoveries | Cross-disciplinary Learning (Suitable for K2 – Primary 6 students)
The Fossil Discovery Programme integrates classroom learning with outdoor exploration, offering a series of earth science–focused and cross‑disciplinary activities, including a fossil exhibition, thematic talks, and field studies within the Nina Park grounds.
Using a progressive “In‑school + Outdoor” model, the programme introduces foundational concepts to students and gradually deepens their scientific understanding. It also fosters awareness of nature conservation and sustainable living. Aligned with the Education Bureau’s updated Primary 1–6 Science Curriculum, the programme provides schools with practical and inspiring support to enrich science teaching.

The programme consists three components: i) Outreach exhibition and talk; ii) Cross-disciplinary workshops (delivered by partner organizations); iii) Nina Park visitation and exploration.
Each activity’s number of participants and duration can be tailored to suit school needs:
- Outreach exhibition and talk is capable to serve one grade of students and/or the entire school; recommended 2 – 4 hours duration.
- Cross-disciplinary workshops (delivered by partner organizations) aims to deepen students’ earth science and environmental learning through cross-disciplinary sessions; workshop content and duration is flexible based on school objectives.
- Park visitation and exploration focuses on developing Earth Science concept with experiential learning through guided tours and interactive tasks, such as hands-on exploration of fossils, rocks, and unique plant features; duration is adjustable from 1 – 3 hours based on school curriculum and schedule.

Outreach exhibition and talk
Featuring four galleries and two interactive zones, the exhibition showcases a curated selection of 20 rare fossil specimens. Students will have the unique opportunity to observe and engage with plants and animals fossils dating back hundreds of millions years — including authentic dinosaur fossil and skull of ancient creature. Guided by professional docents, students gain a foundational understanding of earth’s evolution, sparking curiosity and inspiring a spirit of scientific exploration.
The thematic talk provides a concise introduction designed to support science education, duration approx. 30 minutes duration. Topics include the fossil formations and its origin, the Earth ecological, and Hong Kong’s distinctive geological features. Interactive elements are incorporated to ensure an engaging and memorable learning experience.
Cross-disciplinary Workshops (delivered by partner organizations)
Nina Park offers a diverse range of cross-disciplinary workshops that extend beyond classroom learning and open new pathways for exploration in earth sciences and sustainability. Workshop themes span across wood fossils, STEM, Chinese culture, mental wellness, arts, and cultural discovery, providing students with rich and varied learning experiences.
Through interdisciplinary learning approach, these workshops inspire multi-perspective thinking, foster creativity, and strengthen students’ ability to integrate knowledge across different fields.
Visiting Nina Park
Students will take part in exclusive thematic guided tours, the “Fossil Discovery Handbook” activity, and a Simulated Fossil Excavation Workshop. By exploring different galleries within Nina Park, viewing rare fossil exhibits and acknowledging the park’s sustainable technologies, students engage in an interactive “Edutainment” approach that blends fun with learning. These activities foster scientific thinking and raise awareness of environmental conservation, while gain valuable insights into paleontology, earth sciences, and sustainable living practices.
Learning Highlights:
1. Nina Park Educational Guided Tour (30–50 mins): Students will visit outdoor zones and the Wood Fossil Experience Centre, encountering unique plants and fossils of ancient creatures, and touring park’s renewable energy facilities. Each participant receives a Certificate of Participation.
2. “Fossil Discovery Handbook” Activity (30–50 mins): To reinforcing scientific knowledge through interactive exercises, students learn about plant evolution and examine Hong Kong’s rock specimens. Each participant receives a Fossil Discovery Handbook and a Nina Park Inkless Pen, encouraging sustainable practices in daily life.
3. Simulated Fossil Excavation Workshop (20–30 mins): Students experience hands-on simulated fossil excavation process, gaining insights into fossil formation and reflecting on the importance of environmental protection. Each participant takes home a replica dinosaur skeleton model.
We welcome schools or other communities to contact us for outreach activities, visits to Nina Park, or more details about the Fossil Discovery Programme.
